Help Wanted Library Aide- Part Time

The Rensselaer Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Aide. This person will work approximately 16 hours a week including one evening, starting in May. Duties include shelving, running the check-out desk, helping patrons with the computer and copier, and answering the phone. Candidate must have computer skills, strong customer service skills, work well with children, and can do basic online research. Prior library experience preferred. Job Posting: Youth Services Librarian I (part-time)

Description:

The East Greenbush Community Library is currently accepting applications for a part-time Youth Services Librarian to join a dynamic and dedicated team of professionals. Successful candidates should be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic about public service.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing reference and readers' advisory assistance to children, teens and adults.
  • Planning and conducting storytimes, book clubs, and other programs for children.
  • Assisting in all phases of collection development, including acquisitions and weeding.
  • Maintaining awareness of current trends in children's literature, child development, and library technology.

Schedule:

Position is 15-20 hours a week, and includes evenings and a weekend rotation.

Salary:

$23.75 per hour

Minimum qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited library school
  • New York State Public Librarian Professional Certificate
  • Must be eligible for a provisional appointment as a Librarian I under civil service

Senior Library Clerk - Bach

Candidates must currently be in the classification of Senior Library Clerk to apply.

General Statement of Duties:
Under the direction of the Head of Branch Services, performs moderately complex library clerical operations requiring previous library training or knowledge of library techniques. The position involves substantial public contact, assisting patrons with both use of the library collection and general policies and procedures of the library. This class is distinguished from Library Clerk in that tasks performed are more complex, greater independence is exercised and supervision may be exercised over a small staff. A considerable amount of time operating an alphanumeric keyboard is typical. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of Library Clerks, Pages, student assistants and volunteers.

Classification: Senior Library Clerk

Job Description: Provides library policies and procedures information to the public at the circulation desk; Provides guidance to patrons on the use of the library collection; Searches for simple bibliographical data using standard sources, ILS, etc.; Reviews filing and other work of lower-level clerical employees; Maintains department work schedules; Assists in inventories; Compiles data for statistical reports; Performs registrations and circulation activities on computer terminal; Maintains acquisition and/or accession files and lists; Maintains correspondence with and notifies requestors about the status of items ordered when received, backordered or cancelled; Operates an alphanumeric keyboard to produce correspondence, reports and library documentation; Enters and retrieves information in an automated information system; Inspects returned library material for damage; Verifies due date and computes and receives overdue fines; Issues borrowers identification card according to established procedures and explains lending rules; Supervises and assigns work to Library Clerks and Pages; Under supervision of Librarian, enters bibliographic data on computer terminal; Prepares library material for circulation; Performs related work as required.

Required Skills and Abilities: Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment as applied to library clerical work; Good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; Working knowledge of library services and practices; Ability to support appropriate computer software used in the library environment which includes internet browsers, office automation (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, database) and multi-media software; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to deal in a personable and friendly manner with the public; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to operate an alphanumeric keyboard such as a typewriter, word processor or personal computer at an acceptable rate of speed; Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and strain; Clerical aptitude; Tact and courtesy.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and one (1) year of library clerical experience.

Work ScheduleTotal of 37.50 hours per week with some evening and weekend shifts.

Library Director - Poestenkill Library, Rensselaer County, New York

Due to the retirement of the current director, the Poestenkill Library is looking for a new director. Nestled in the rural, rolling countryside of Rensselaer County (population 4,530), this association library is a valued community resource actively supported by its patrons and the town. Reporting to the library's Board of Trustees and supported by the Friends of Poestenkill Library, the Library Director develops library policies, monitors library services, develops and manages the annual budget of $91,920, creates public relations materials and programming, supervises staff and volunteers, oversees the physical plant, and stays informed of developments in library management.

Responsibilities:

  • Management of all library services, including circulation (18,808 in 2020), operations and activities consistent with library policies and NYS law
  • Supervision and development of support staff and volunteers
  • Development and evaluation of all library programming
  • Budget preparation in collaboration with the Board, recommendation of policies and goals, and regular communication with the Library Board of Trustees

Qualifications:

  • Minimum
    • Two academic years of study at an approved college or university
    • Experience with community outreach or related community work
  • Preferred
    • Bachelor's degree
    • Experience with administration of a library

Employment Type/Salary

  • Part-time--Approximately 20 hours/week with some flexibility based on current library activities
  • $22,500

Library Clerk, part time, Guilderland Public Library

Guilderland Public Library is looking for enthusiastic, customer-service/detail oriented individuals to join our team in our, soon to be, beautiful new library. Responsibilities include working with library patrons of all ages to issue cards, access accounts to deliver or reserve materials, collect payments, and re-shelving materials.

Positions available average 8-15 hours available per week; Schedule includes weekdays or weeknights and weekend shifts on rotation. Pay starting at $13.91 per hour with NY State Retirement.
